Secure Power  specialist Master Power Technologies is adding value to its widespread UPS customer base with remote monitoring of UPS installations located in Southern Africa and as far afield as Ghana.

Known as the Life.Net system (L.I.F.E. - Long distance Insurance For Energy) it currently monitors 113 large UPS systems manufactured for Master Power Technologies by the Global UPS specialist Chloride, a company in the international Emerson stable. The UPS units are supporting  the critical operations of major banks, cellular service providers, large data centres and other critical businesses.

Jacques de Jager, IT systems manager at Master Power Technologies, says the objectives of Life.Net are to analyse UPS performance and power supply trends. Such analysis permits quick identification of power related issues before they become a threat to electrical equipment protected by UPS.

Life.Net guarantees 24 hours a day, 365 days a year monitoring of the connected UPS units and can be accessed remotely by authorised technical personnel.The system provides detailed analysis and preventative diagnosis without disruption at customers’ premises.

“Once installed at the site the UPS can be fully monitored remotely using the facilities in the Life.Net room at our Randburg headquarters. The system offers exceptionally high service levels and ensures our reaction to any problem is immediate.”

The system records all events on the UPS and Life.Net is able to store and download the events record for every installation. De Jager says that due to the high efficiency levels of the Life.Net data base, it does not require large amounts of memory.

The events screen displays a series of events for diagnosis and enables the data to be examined in great detail through a drill down feature.

“Life.Net also monotors battery temperatures which is important because the higher the temperature, the shorter the battery life. We are also able to predict when a battery is reaching end of life. This is achieved through the use of algorithims measuring data associated with frequency and duration of mains failures, temperature, float voltages and actual installed period.

Load information analysis is able to track load changes and any trends that exist such as high or low loads at different times of the day, week or month. The quality of the mains supply is also monitored and all occurrence and duration of power failures as well as periods of poor voltage quality, are tracked.

Reports are prepared on a monthly basis for all clients using the Chloride Master Guard systems. These are sent to the data centre. De Jager says buffers on site ensure that routine data is never lost and an automatic dial through ensures rapid response if there is a fault or problem.

“The Life.Net system provides total emergency, alarm and routine alerts and lists power failures with times and duration. It also detects and lists overloads and enables automatic by-pass supply switching or out-of-tolerance supply switching, “ says de Jager.

Access to important information includes maximum load current per phase; annual trends for a single UPS or groups of UPS; battery cubicle/room temperatures and annual trends; inlet air temperatures; mains voltage inputs and failures; real output power and apparent kVA from which the efficiency of the solution can be determined; a summary list of all events, with times and durations; incidences of battery discharging and by-pass mains failures, among others.

According to de Jager, Life.Net in simplistic terms is a service tool which provides data which improves the quality and reliability of the UPS  installation. It also improves response time and ensures maximum operational efficiency and minimal downtime.

“It allows us to react much more quickly to any situation. The master monitoring station resides with Chloride in Italy, allowing them to detect operational trends in different parts of the world. This information is used by Chloride engineers and designers to ensure ongoing operational improvement in the UPS products.”

As Master Power Technologies technicians are able to analyse the customer’s critical UPS operational data at any time, they gain valuable insight into alarm conditions and causes which enables rapid problem-solving either on-site or remotely through the Life.Net system.
